Frequently Asked Questions

If you are new to our program, you probably have questions.  Please browse through this list, and feel free to contact us if you have questions that we haven't answered here.

  • Which age group does my child fall under and how are they determined?
SMSL follows the standard USYSA age groupings.  Players may play up an age group if they provide proof that they are in the higher age group's school grade, or if determined by the league coaching staff to be skilled enough.  Players may not play down an age group.  Age groups are based on date of birth and not grade level.  SMSL reserves the right to combine age groups if necessary.  A player may only play for one team.  Click here for a listing of current age groups.
  • When do games begin?
Please check the games schedule for your age group.
  • Where do we play?

All games for U-10 and lower age groups are played at the Shackleford Ridge fields.  Click here for directions.  U-12 and up have home games played here and away games are played at locations around town, such as Middle Valley.

  • How do I register?
We hold registration days where you can sign up at the Mountain Arts Community Center, you can register online, or you can download a form from our website and send it to our PO Box.
  • Can I get a refund?

In order to obtain a refund, please send our registrar a letter requesting the refund within two weeks of the season start date.  Please allow two weeks before you receive your refund check.  SMSL reserves the right to deduct the cost of the uniform/jersey if one has been provided.

  • What is the procedure for inclement weather?
If you are not sure whether fields will be closed for games or practice, please call our information line at 517-1700.
  • How many games do we play per season?
Players will be scheduled for a eight games in the spring, and ten in the fall.  Most teams ( except for the U6 bracket) try to practice once per week, usually on a week night.  Players may also have the opportunity to participate in other soccer related activities such as skills camps, scrimmages, tournaments, and indoor soccer.
  • Does SMSL need coaches for the recreational league?

Parents who would like to coach recreational teams are encouraged to download this form and send it in.  We always need coaches and assistants, and we appreciate your help.
